Worst of IMRO New Sounds Stage at Oxegen 2009
Posted on July 9, 2009 by Contributor
IMRO roll the independent bandwagon to another pitch at Oxegen 2009 with a varied three day bill. Visiting guests Broken Records, St Vincent and Wintersleep provide a distinctly indie theme over the weekend, countered by Irish heavy-hitters ASIWYFA and Concerto For Constantine. Villagers, David Kitt, Heathers, Dark Room Notes and Cashier No9 make up the Irish contingent star picks, while Codes and Director boast brand-new album repertoires.
Despite some strong headliners, the line-up is a bit weak by day, and IMRO don’t seem to realise that well-planned afternoon shows are their best bet when up against the big stage dominance at night. Neither is there a sense of the huge energy apparent in Irish music, with little sign of any great new developments: where are Funeral Suits, Axis of, Sleep Thieves, Talulah Does The Hula, Enemies or Alias Empire?
Alas, it seems that this Oxegen is not quite the winner it was first suggested to be, better bands could have filled the tent during afternoon lulls, and there’s a disappointing number of tired names who are certainly not the New Sounds of IMRO today.
Therfore, Drop-D presents to you: the 10 biggest wastes of Oxegen from IMRO this weekend!

The Flaws
FRIDAY
1) Prowler – way to sound like sex offenders, guys. Your name sucks too.
2) On the subject of names, what possessed Stone Motion to name themselves after a hugely unsuccessful, inferior Irish band?
3) The Flaws – Your new album better be good considering Achieving Blandness did exactly what it said on the tin.
4) The Mighty Stef today, the Shane MacGowan of tomorrow?

Joe Echo
SATURDAY
1) Between boring Blizzards drivel on the main stage and Carosel in the IMRO tent, don’t expect to stay awake. Get yourself over to the Red Bull Academy Stage for NI hip hop producer DEFCON instead.
2) Joe Echo – annoying git. Currently recording a debut album. Please don’t buy it, let’s limit any further spread of this crap.
3) While The Mars Volta, Boyz Noise and Crystal Castles rip out seven shades, why would you bother with Director ?

SUNDAY
1) The Jades - Black Daisy without the back-stabbing.
2) The Chakras - Someone build their astrakhan asses a swan and set them on a river. Preferably white-water rapids.
3) Concerto For Constantine – you will never be in Smashing Pumpkins, Mark. Get over it.

Lucky for us, we know our caps lock from crap schlock.
Ooooh! Burn!
jaysus.your worst list is bollocks.caught that band Prowler today and they were unreal.best band of the day so far
I actually think The Mighty Stef is excellent. Isn’t it a strange coincidence that ‘cowboy c’ commented on how great he thought Prowler were shortly after Prowler posted a comment? Nothing suspicious there, then.
Yeah, probably one of their “legions of fans” or 117 MySpace friends.
i cant find this Prowler band on myspace, it’s a fairly common name, what’s the link, i gotta hear these….
this feature is a bit unneccesary.i mean the imro stage is for bands tryin to get a foot on the ladder.and this feature is trying to put them down before they even played.i caught stone motion and prowler. they were both really good.not the best of the day(blur) but they were better than alot of the acts on bigger stages that i saw.i just think this is very unfair, especially since it was written before any of the bands played.you obviously have nothing to go on.
I’d like to remind everyone that ASIWYFA are playing!!!
God, I wish I was there…..
this article is gay……
no not suspicious at all, i mean i typed “prowler imro” into google to try find a myspace or something and this was the first thing on the list.”worst”? i was a bit taken aback cause i thought they were great, hence my comment last night.Logical
ah ha found them:
http://www.myspace.com/prowlerrock
how did they get a gig, only 2373 page views and they get a gig at Oxegen, i wanna know who they’re riding and i’ll will ride them better….
they’re an ok band, would probably sound better if i’d a few pints in me
Thanks for the info
What an utterly negative and wasteful use of internet space this article is. So you dont like the line up of new and emmerging talent within a tent that provides the aforementioned category with an opportunity to shine, in a small way, on Ireland’s biggest Festival Wknd.
I am just back from Oxegen and tried to make the attempt to get to all tents today to at least have said i experienced them all in some shape or form and I avoided the Kings Of Leon. With the exception of Villagers, Concerto and The Chapters I am somewhat unfamiliar with current crop of emmerging Irish talent. I am however delighted to report that i took time out to see Codes perform this evening and left the tent somewhat hugely impressed that a band i had never heard of left such an impression on me. Potentially enormous stars of the future based on the confidence and ability tonight and i found them in your Mickey Mouse IMRO Tent!
Peter
Good going, you’ve just publicly put down a couple of 16 and 17 year-old kids who played at Irelands biggest rock festival in the band Prowler without having ever even seen them play, and just judging them by a name, congratulations you brilliant person you.
Well I guess we can’t all be as important as internet bloggers like yourself, keep it up you should be very proud of yourself
Er…Peter. You’re from Cluas and you’re unfamiliar with Irish music? Time to brush up on your skills man, one weekend at Oxegen does not the music critic make you.
P.M. – Oxegen is wasted on the young, then?
Get off your damn high horses. All of those bands mentioned above are fucking awful, minors or not.
and which of these “fucking awful ” bands did you see at oxegen?
I think bloggers are more content in writing negative things about bands, as opposed to positive. bands cant’ be judged after listening to them once.. If you’re gonna take the time out to say something shitty about a band, the least you can do ,is take some time out to listen to the music, properly.. anyway, as far as i see it, the most critical people are non-musicians.. I guarantee you that one of those bands from the IMRO stage will be a huge succes in a few years to come, and that will be great to see. I played at it yesterday, and jesus, if i had known there were so many nasty bogger people in the audience, i definitely wouldn’t have enjoyed myself at all! anyway, keep up the dissing… it makes for an exciting read.
And So I Watched You From Afar aren’t awful!!!
In case I didn’t mention earlier, I like ASIWYFA…..
…..
…..
Nope I am not from Cluas, i champion Cluas website when i can. I write for mags in the Uk and i live in Ireland. Thats my background and i said ‘somewhat’ unfamiliar with the current crop of emerging acts. Nor did i claim to be a rock critic, that was an assumption.
So what we’ve established from this thread is that in YOUR opinion, “all those bands above are fucking awful”.
So your entitled to it as we are to ours, my original point was that starting a debate based on “the worst bands to see effectively” in a new up and coming tent really doesnt do any of those acts any favours and doesnt really have any positive reverbs for Irish Music either.
Anyway, people will make their own minds up.
100 percent agree with peter. i caught the first 2 bands on the friday on imro and they were incredible.especially Prowler, who were imho the best band i saw on the day
SR09 – All Drop-d writers are staunch supporters of Irish music. Familarise yourself with the site and you’ll see.
Jon – no one’s dissing ASIWYFA, don’t worry
Peter – So you don’t write for Cluas, apols. Easy mistake to make though if you hyperlink back to the site.
So if you’re not a rock critic, why have you condemned an opinion on music? Can you argue that there are/were better bands who deserve a spot at Oxegen? Obviously not, seeing as you’re so out of the loop.
And Codes have been around for years and years man. Catch up!
Cowboy – Of the ten listed bands, I’ve heard 9 live and listened to Prowler on MySpace and thought they were awful. Simple as.
I don’t like the term ‘Rock Critic’ so i dont use it. I am a music journalist.
“Hi Peter thanks for your email. You’ve caught me in the middle of a soaking wet Oxegen. Glad you enjoyed the set and no worries. Beauty about music is people can always discover you at any point in your life cycle if the band has the songs. Codes were formed in March 07 but the guys have played in other bands in the past, you know yourself. Thanks again for the interest.”
That’s an edited email from Codes manager, wouldnt quite say they have been around years and years on hearing that. My attentions and efforts have been on the Uk music scene for the past 3 years and i have only recently moved back home to Ireland.
Anyway, thats me out. Have made my point.
Interesting article. I always like to see a bit of brass in writing, whether it’s right or not (which isn’t the point).
I keep an ear out for as much music from Ireland as possible and haven’t heard of half the bands playing over the weekend. I wonder what IMRO’s selection policy for the stage is? On which stage did the winners of the Platform V competition play?
how can you judge from a demo made so early into a bands history, not taking into account line up changes, time passed since then, demo budget and the like?Live music is where you can rightfully judge bands.that’s where true talent shines.fair enough if you saw the other 9 live.then you can have a fair view on that.awful is still however very strong. the bands i saw at imro were at the very least good at their selected genre.
Because I can. I hear loadsa music by others that’s new/rough/changed line-ups and it sounds way better, instead of the same old, tired, rehashed riffs. Talent is not confined to a stage or studio – but if a band have any, it will out. In Prowler’s case, it didn’t. Simple as.
i saw them live.they were great. you didn’t see them.you missed out.
Did cowboy just take his ball and go home?
I thought Stone Motion were really good I enjoyed there music alot
hope to see them again soon.

Elements of this thread remind me of this article;

Now if you want to argue with a 58 year old legends knowledge by all means work away! :O)
Hope it was fun for all at Oxegen…
I’ve been going to the Mezz most Sunday evenings as they have 5 upcoming Irish bands playing there and I must say the quality of the rising talent is fucking awesome. Compared to what I was seeing 4 or 5 years ago most of these guys are really talented.
There are some pretty bad Irish bands out there but what I see on Sundays is changing my mind about the state of Irish music.
Yeah Mezz is pretty good lately, Monday night a few weeks ago there were some great bands, didn’t catch any names, great fun though, very relaxed and relaxing
I have to say, some of the bands were really promising. I seen The Mighty Stef, Distractors, Jenna Toro and Carosel. The Mighty Stef and Jenna Toro are pretty unique for Irish Artists I think… they’re doing something a bit different. 2fm covered Distractors and Jenna Toro too. Found this from oxygen.. short though.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOSaoP00mCI . then this is the full one obviously http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxjdYdbh1yI. Can’t find any of her own stuff but it sounded good at oxygen. missed the first bit of the mighty stef… wished i hadn’t.
Thought the first one didnt come up!
Ah yeah, first-timer comments are held for moderation…thanks for sharing these links!
oh my god. hehe
Whoever wrote this article is a hero. Too many people hold their tongues in Irish muso journalism for fear of pissin off mates or bands of their mates or whatever.
Fair play – all those bands are shite. ASIWYFA *obviously* not included cause they awesomeo yo.
