The Last Tycoons formed in 2007 evolving from highly acclaimed Dublin band Porn Trauma. Their debut album hit the shelves in April and has been really well received by critics.

Their music of is a really unique blend of Southern American with their built in Irish charm. The album’s vocals sound like a mix between Nick Cave and Mick Jagger, fitting for their unique jumble of instruments and collaboration. Debut single The Dry Law, a drinking man’s anthem set in prohibition/depression-era America was written by front-man Steve Fanning while experimenting with sobriety for a month. The single was aptly released on Good Friday. After finding a place in the Irish Charts and on Radio Stations around the country the band released their self titled album in April of this year which was met with warm reviews by critics. The album has some high and low points. There’s a bit of a slump mid way with the track Don’t Let Me Catch You which is a bit slower and not quite as strong as their other tracks, , but it picks straight back up right after with Seven Days (Off The Road). They obviously didn’t set out to make the feel good album of the year. It’s dark and dirty and powerful, but it is what it is and it really works. It has a different blend of songs with its peculiar mix of blues and honky-tonk style piano and guitar on Alaska Hotel and some more indie songs like Good Times. It’s a good mix of songs which keeps it interesting. Drop-d Rating: 7/10 The Last Tycoons
