October 16th saw the release of Shoot Me a debut EP from Dublin based band Soundproof. The band, 3 brothers, Ste, Neilo and Puss, and their friend Rosie formed in 2006 and have since played in venues like Whelan’s, The Button Factory, The Sugar Club and Eamon Doran’s. The EP contains three tracks Shoot Me, Chasing the Dream and Come Play a Different Game, all of which are available to sample on the band’s MySpace.

Soundproof, Shoot Me
It’s a decent EP, but the one fault I found with it is a fairly big one, the three songs all follow a very similar structural pattern, all starting with arpeggiated guitar melodies leading into vocal heavy and fairly bland verses.
The songs all have catchy choruses but they’re relying on that a bit too much. While they’re good musicians the EP really doesn’t bring anything new, and because all three songs have a similar structure it gets tiresome after a few listens.
On their MySpace the band claims to be melodic rock, and while their melodic influences are obvious, they seem to be struggling to capture that sound for themselves. While they have the makings of a really good band there’s still something missing.
That said Shoot Me is a debut EP, and a good way for the band to test the waters and see how people respond to their music. The launch gig for the album was held in The Village on the night of it’s release.
