Skibunny
The band has been described as a mix of The Cure and Joy Division but admittedly I didn’t hear any similarities to either. I can understand why they have such appeal as an electronica band but the EP isn’t reinventing the wheel. Their songs are quite funky (do people still say funky?) and will, I would imagine, have a fairly built-in audience of club-goers but further to that might be a case of ‘you’ll either love it or you’ll hate it’.
In March 2009, Skibunny showcased at Canadian Music Week in Toronto, and were picked by the Toronto Independent Music Awards as one of the “must-see” bands of the festival. At SXSW in Austin, Texas, they played a massive 6 shows, yet still finding time for Tanya to do a bit of singing on stage with LA band The Mae Shi!
Back in the UK, they played to a capacity crowd at The Camden Crawl, with Radio 1’s Huw Stephens twittering like mad about their performance. Then they disappeared into the studio, emerging only to play or DJ at a few key festivals, including a main stage DJ slot at BESTIVAL, between Doves and Fleet Foxes, plus they went back to the US to play & DJ at CMJ in New York. By the end of 2009 the debut LP was complete and they ended the year with a fun UK tour opening for Har Mar Superstar.
The EP is available in stores and from all the usual download sites.
