Super Extra Bonus Party, Night Horses
Posted on May 21, 2009 by Aoibheann Maguire
Thankfully, Super Extra Bonus Party (SEBP) are back with a stomping new album Night Horses; just in time for summer.
It kicks off with a rather infectious, upbeat guitar laden, Sonic Youth-style, track Super Team Go! that was made to be played outdoors, under the sun, at festivals. Fans,of these Choice Music Prize winners, won’t be disappointed with this band’s superb second album.
Each song on this album has a distinctly different feel – much like a DJ mix – which makes it the perfect backdrop to any party!
The thing that people are going to talk about most when they mention SEBP’s latest release is the introduction of a variety of guest vocalists. They have everyone, from Canadian MC Cadence Weapon to Kilkenny MC Captain Moonlight, lending them lines. May-Kay the lead singer from Fight like Apes also provides some high pitched screeching and shouting on Eamonn a real American garage type track.
You may have heard Comets, featuring Heathers, a straight forward pop-tune, with an excellent opening riff, as it’s getting quite a lot of deserved airplay. Other collaborations on Night Horses include a more ambient offering Sonora with Anne Scott, and some high-class rhymes courtesy of Rodrigo Teles and Mr. Lif.
Night Horses is a genre blending album that combines guitars, hip hop elements and more straight forward pulsating electronic beats, but it’s all really smooth. In some ways you’d think this band are making music in some far-off exotic location – rather than under grey Dublin skies.
Although SEBP are taking things in a new direction when you hear this album you’re going to be transported back to good times, to clubbing, to parties and hanging out with friends. Overall, each song on this album has a distinctly different feel – much like a DJ mix – which makes it the perfect backdrop to any party!
Drop-d Rating: 8/10
Super Extra Bonus Party will be playing tonight in Andrews Lane Theatre with support from theRubberbandits, and Captain Moonlight.
