There aren’t many music fans that pay attention to what song makes it as the Christmas single.  But for the past 4 years, Simon Cowell’s X-Factor has dominated the Christmas Number One slot.  However, the pinnacle of annoyance was reached last year when Alexander Burke released a cover of Jeff Buckleys, Hallelujah.  A large number of people attempted to adjust the outcome by buying the original Jeff Buckey version, however it only made it to Number 2.  When the majority of people are buying a lack-lustre cover of a song instead of the original masterpiece, perhaps it’s time to let X-Factor know that it doesn’t have the music industry by the balls.  Just yet.

In response to this plague of popular culture imitating popular culture, Facebook users are spreading the word about a worthy champion for this years coveted Christmas Number One slot.  Killing In The Name Of by Rage Against The Machine.

Oh yes.

The 13th of December begins the countdown to the Christmas number one.  From this date until Christmas Eve,  using their cash as ballot paper, the general public will decide on the last number one single of 2009.  Whether you’re a Rage Against The Machine fan, an X-Factor fan, or just interested in some devilment, this will be a good exercise in democracy to see if this song gets to number one.  For those of you who want to participate, simply purchase Killing In The Name Of from iTunes from on the 13th of December onwards.  Do NOT purchase the single before this date, as this does not contribute to the Christmas number one.

Ok just one thing that needs correction. LEONARD COHEN did the original of Hallelujah. Jeff Buckley covered it along with loads of other artists. However I do agree that although I enjoy X Factor as a TV entertainment show that it is time some ‘real’ music got a chance at getting the ‘coveted’ xmas number 1.

She got ya there, Paul. Cohen from 83 or 84, if memory serves. A truly class track though. And as far as I’m concerned, anything that gets the mediocre cover generation off any top spot is good. Remember the days when artists actually wrote their own tracks. God be with the days. And the other problem now is it’s all singles. Where’s the album bands in so-called ‘pop’ music? Pop used to mean popular music. Alot of bands don’t go the singles route. Take AC/DC or Metallica. Not overly chart friendly, yet most definitely popular. Back in the late 80′s/early 90′s, they didn’t advertise an album release or a gig. They didn’t need to. When Justice came out, no ads. The album sold out in hours. OK, the Sound Cellar was the only place that had it, but they sold hundreds (no exag). I’ll stop now before the rant REALLY kicks in!

Fair enough. It wasnt his own tune. But it be nice to see something other XFactor generated songs get air play.
