“…this solo project takes a step away from the heavy guitar riffs and insanely fast drum-tracks normally used in 65daysofstatic, to bring something more emphasized on the electronic side of post-rock…”

Remember the very old MS-DOS games that were made in the 80s, and went on to make a small fortune? Remember the sounds? The music? 65daysofstatic’s very own Paul Wolinski does, and he has used this theme to bring to us his debut album “Labyrinths”, under the name “POLINSKI”. As a third of the original band, he uses influences of his own combined with the magic and sizzle of 65dos and some synthesized vocals to create a unique album.

We begin the 7-track espionage with “1985-QUEST”, a fully electronic introduction to Labyrinths, with distorted bass, and 8-bit melodies. The nostalgia is  a welcome effect which reminds us of the opening track to “We Were Exploding Anyway”, and how it builds up to an impressive finish, and fades slowly into the next track, his first single “STITCHES”. This track features the robotic vocals of “Big Black Delta” and utilises them to great effect, along with glitches, light bass and 8-bit beeps, to make us feel like we are listening to a soundtrack of the old video games of the 80’s. An impressive two- track introduction to the album. “LIKE FIREFLIES” is a very fast-pased track with the old 65dos influence comprised of 8 bit instrumental and glitchy ambience in the background that gradually builds up in volume and simmers down to a beautiful finale. One of my favourite tracks on the album.

This solo project takes a step away from the heavy guitar riffs and insanely fast drum-tracks normally used in 65daysofstatic, to bring something more emphasized on the electronic side of post-rock. And I’m pleased to say that this experimental side project is looking more and more successful in the future, by the minute as I listen to the album over and over again.

Think Daft Punk with the influence of post-rock integrated inside. This is POLINSKI, and it’s brilliant. If you like electronica or dance, this might be up your alley. An exceptional album, to say the least. Hopefully we will be seeing more of Paul Wolinski, his new tracks, and live on stage here in Ireland soon.

Here is the link for the video for the second track of the album, and POLINSKI’s first single, STITCHES. Notice the incredibly retro emphasis in the video. Then embrace it, again and again as art. http://vimeo.com/30763545

If you feel like purchasing the album, it’s only €4.80 via PayPal. As well as that, there are sets which include merchandise with the album. http://monotremerecords.limitedpressing.com/product/categories/2169
