An Indicater Christmas comes to us courtesy of those jolly folk at Indiecater and much like the series of Alternative Christmas' records a few years ago" which featured bands like Sonic Youth" Smashing Pumpkins etc" it promises to give the listener a different take on the festivities. And unlike many many other Christmas records this one boasts that all songs are originals.
The Cloud Room get the ball rolling with Melody" Like Snow" which isn t anything like any Christmas song heard before unless maybe The Cure and the Jesus and Mary Chain had got together over a crate of mulled wine and decided to scare the living be"jaysus outta everyone. Tim Burton should edit this song into the 3D version of his Nightmare Before Christmas.
The Wonderful Nina Hynes follows with Twinkle and its just so impossibly hard not to like Ms. Hynes" she sings like a nightingale in a wasteland of toxicity.
The record moves at a quick enough pace without too many ballad"y songs" some songs are hardly christmas songs at all the only way you'd know is that they've got some sleigh bells ringing in the mix.
The highlight comes from Billy Baird called Christmas in Jail" a tale of drunken lust for a waitress" drink"driving and ending up in the slammer for the Crimbo. Excellent and tragic all at the one time.
Other highlights include Jape's effort with David Kitt called I Will Cry This Christmas" Jape really can't put a foot wrong lately can he"
Also there's the wonderful This Year Christmas Came November 4th by The Very Most.
There are plenty of other good tracks on the album but the thing about it is that" like most things Christmas" it causes arguments between everyone. Some will love the more Christmas"y songs" more will prefer the more alternative sounding offerings. Whatever you prefer support this release and get texting radio stations with your requests and try and rid this world of the sludge that we usually have to listen to like Cliff Richard" Boney M" Paul McCartney and fuckin Wham.
