2 Hours Late E.P.
April has welcomed one of the finest releases to come out of the People"s Republic in a long time. Following the fluorescent alt country circus of Fred"s Making Music So You Don"t Have To and also the eagerly awaited release from Cork"s very own Benedict XVI" "otherwise known as John Spillane"" we come across an act who are slowly but surely become the city"s favourite band.
Arriving 3 months after a sold out show in The "thank f"ck it"s open again" Lobby in January" Stanley Super 800 decided to grace us with their presence again in the bigger Cyprus Avenue. And again they packed another venue to the rafters. The reason behind the gig was to coincide with the release of their 2"Hours Late e.p.
Tonight in their set they showcased all five tracks on the e.p. One of them" Voices In The Music" is from their self"titled album. It"s a bit of slow haunting song with this spooky atmosphere surrounding Stan"s singing. Y"know the RTE show Other Voices" Well imagine if it was recorded in the Mitchelstown caves" and The Super Furry Animals were playing. This is what it would sound like. Harmonica is an instrumental number" which anyone who"s been to their live shows will instantly recognise. Here" drummer Dave picks up the guitar" as he did for the opening part of the gig" and the band proceed to jam for about 5 minutes. You may say what"s so special about this" Well" the melody behind this particular tune will stay in you"re head for approximately 8 and a half days until you"re head bursts. If it had lyrics it would be dangerous" and would probably be on Prenderville in the morning. "Maybe that"s why it"s an instrumental"".
The highlights of the show however are two tracks which stand head and shoulders above everything else they"ve done. It"s All Over Now and Borange. The fact that they"ve even named a song Borange deserves a round of Murphy"s. If my memory serves me right" this was one of the highlights in their support slot at Fred"s album launch in the Opera House. It"s supposedly about how SS800 saved the world. It sounds exactly what you want the band to sound like. The lyrics are A Day In The Lifeesque" accompanied by the band playing the type of indie pop perfection that we"d expect from The Pixies. "With a banjo of course". The other track" It"s All Over Now is a full electric version of the song that appears on the album. It"s easily their most accessible song. A kind of love song with Stan singing "I don"t need you anymore/I don"t love you anymore". Come to think of it" it"s quite bloody sad actually" but with the new band version" it goes at a kind of Teenage Fan club"type pace that will want you to put it on full blast in the car stereo as you forget about you"re ex and think about the good times ahead. And also" it"s right up there with releases from Joe Chester and The Kaiser Chiefs as being one of the catchiest songs you will hear this year"
If you don"t believe me" go to De Barra"s in Clonakilty on May 7th and find out for yourself"
