Galway”s Philip “Flinders” Flynn will release his See Saw Still album ” recorded in June and July ” into the world next month” following a decent critical reception for his The Ground Floor EP last year.
To keep us going for the moment we get this single featuring Corners First”Middle Later and two other songs whose names I cannot seem to find anywhere “feel free to let me know in the comments”.
The lead track of Corners First”Middle Later is an excellent piece of work with a repeated utterance of the word “hi” looping in the background” fuzzy guitars and Flynn“s lilting voice giving the pop”experimental track a very catchy melody that will easily stick in your head after only a few listens.
The second track kicks off with that familiar echoing submarine sound from Massive Attack “and many other acts” and a muted synth just about humming ominously. Light bongos and some church organ complement proceedings and it”s an eerie” intriguing song with subtle vocals and a slight air of menace throughout.
In the third and final track” a walkie talkie conversation rabbits gently in the mix ” sounding similar to the closing credits of HBO”s excellent Generation Kill mini”series ” while an acoustic guitar flutters around. Once again Flynn“s wistful falsetto fits seamlessly into the layers of ethereality while some beautiful cello playing by Kim Porcelli underpins it all.
These are three original” intelligent tracks” with an unhurried vibe and a palpable musical confidence oozing from the Tribesman and if the idea is to whet the public appetite for the September main course of See Saw Still” consider me suitably hungry and ready to dig in like a gourmand with an elasticated waist on his trousers.
