Live Review: Dry County at ClubAC30" Whelans
This is Dry County's last Dublin gig ever. And oh how the heart bleeds at such news" especially after such a rip"roaring show. What's the world coming to" eh"" How can four men of such stature and greatness bring this triumphant and earth"shatteringly awesome band to a close" Well" fear not because unless you're going to Oxegen or to the Earagail Festival in Donegal to witness one of the most powerful shows in current Irish music" then Dry County will be back" but in a different guise and name. But please Jesus" Allah" Buddha not with a different sound.
Nu"Rave was probably a buzz"word worth mentioning in a PR campaign for major record labels last year when they tried fooling us all into thinking that the Klaxons and Enter Shikari were worth a toss. It would be both foolish and immature to mention Dry County in the same breath as Nu"Rave" even though they have been previously" for the simple reason that these boys could" and should have the likes of Unkle and Underworld opening for them"
Frontman Kevin Littlewood throws glowsticks around Whelan's to fans as if they were a shipment of something not quite legal that needed to be shifted post"haste. Fans drink it up" just like a Daniel"Day Lewis milkshake ala There Will Be Blood.
Tonight's visual display is the band's fifth member. If you've been to a God is an Astronaut gig you'll know how a visual performance can add even more to what is already a wonderful experience. And it's also worth a mention that GIAA's Torsten and Niels are present for Dublin's farewell to Dry County.
Halt for a moment though" why hasn't the music been mentioned"…Because there has been too much of a sensory overload. If this band were from across the water to our left or right they would get the media that they deserve and we would all be reaching up" hands towards the gods and having a right sing"a"long.
However" they are not and for tonight they belong to the crowd assembled in Whelan's. They even give the crowd a new song" Pins" even though Dry County will be no more" how can they have new material" Crowd favourites of the night Edit Makes Right" Attention and Stop Proceed leave a mark on everybody crammed in Whelan's tonight. We can only hope and pray that" whatever guise they'll go under next" the boys of Dry County will be back soon and in the same irresistible form… If a rose were called by another name it would still smell as sweet or so the saying goes.
