Beard Seeking Missile " Interview

Mike" Parky and Ger were in the Quad. Mike turns to Parky "comere we should start a band"" Parky turns to mike slightly amused by the suggestion "oh yea""" Mike raises his head off the bar "ya totally" its your round by the way". At this point Ger proclaims "lets think up a name" like". After much more boozing and a pinch of thinking" three possible names" one per person" were scrawled on a piece of newspaper and passed around the bar and random punters put a tick after their favourite of the three. And the winner"…..BEARD SEEKING MISSILE".. "Yes Boy" Ger exclaims" "Its a quote from black books" like". Well that"s how it all began"

Drop"D not"so"recently met with Beard Seeking Missile" one of the rare genuinely exciting up"and"coming Cork bands at the moment. While Ger was sadly missing" we still got a helluva lot of information from them". particularly about Finland"

Are there any plans to record an EP anytime soon"

Mike: Yes. Yes there is.

Would you care to elaborate"

Mike: We"ve only been together since July and we"ve got a core of songs now that we"re playing. We"re still not at the level where we could pick from the group of songs what would be our best song and we"re still writing basically so until we"re happy with what songs we want to start recording" not for a while I"d say.

Do you think your sound is evolving and improving since you"ve started"

Kevin: Well the thing about the first gig we ever did" what really kicked us in the ass was we had this idea of having a band and basically it was Terry from Tidal Suns who said "lads" wanna have a gig in a month"s time"" and we had no songs prepared" we had no songs" we had one kinda song but we said listen four originals and one cover and in four weeks we wrote four original songs and probably four of our best songs.

Mike: Yeah and then they"ve all been shit since.

Kevin: No" though I think those core songs have evolved a lot and have got very good since we started playing them. Some of the newer ones we have are maybe more technical. There"s a song that Parky wrote when he was younger and that pretty much came packaged and everything but they"re growing into their own now.

Did you have much musical experience between yourselves before BSM"

We"re all classically trained. No" Anthony is a classical drummer

Anthony: Yeah I play percussion" which is drum kit and xylophone and piano as well" but we all come from some sort of musical background" we"ve all played instruments and stuff before

What has been the highlight of the band so far"

Kevin: I would say getting paid but we haven"t gotten paid yet".

Mike: I suppose it would still have to be the Drop"D gig. "laughs" It was just great to play there and all because we"ve played other venues we won"t mention but sometimes the sound can let you down" in Cyprus Avenue you can hear a pin drop.

Anthony: Yeah it"s very special" the way the acoustics are. You can actually hear everything that"s going on as opposed to just a cymbal and kinda guessing from reading Mike"s lips what"s going on.

Mike: Maybe a bit too well sometimes"

Who have been your favourite bands to play with so far"

Anthony: I like Jezery" I thought they were very good

Mike: And Neon Flea Circus. Violent Jack are nice lads" we played with them.

Kevin: I liked Eat Your Face" they were good as well. Very nice fellas.

Do you have plans for touring outside Cork"

Kevin: We"ve got our Finnish tour"

Mike: Yeah. I do gigs in the Quad so I"m in contact with a lot of bands from around the country so we"re getting loads of promises of gigs out in Limerick and Belfast and one in London possibly so it"s looking good.

Where are you hoping to be this time next year"

Kevin: I"m actually leaving the band. So Finland" So the band is inevitably going to fall apart" you"re never gonna find a lead guitarist"seriously though" I see myself probably somewhere very cold.

Mike: As a band" I presume having the makings of an LP and gigging around the country and hopefully have the right people begin to notice us.

What do you think of the Cork music scene generally"

Ciaran: I think it"s definitely improving. There are a lot of opportunities there.

Kevin" I"m probably the only here that actually isn"t from Cork originally" I"m from Wexford and there"s fuck all in Wexford basically. I mean" there"s a few good bands in Waterford and the like but it"s nothing like being in Cork where you can find a gig on a Monday night. The variety of the gigs is good. And through playing with other bands we get connections" which is also excellent. There"s a lot of stuff I got" a lot of CDs that I would have never have got only for this band.
