If it weren"t for my sister recognising Phil Boughton from about 20 hungry cinemagoers in the IFI" we"d probably still be searching around that scene. With the subtle vocals and riffs of Phil" combined with Simon Rand on drums and backing voice "not an easy thing to do at the same time"" and Daryl Chaney on bass" Envelope" have been going strong for over 2 years.

So how did you guys meet"
Me and Daryl went to secondary school together. He came into my year" he looked like a bassist when I saw him" I don"t know how" he just did. I asked him if he played bass" he said yes. He was in a Red Hot Chilli Peppers tribute band at the time" so I had to persuade him away from that. Then we spent about 2 years looking for a drummer. We spent most of that time playing" writing and recording" just the two of us. Then at the start of 2005 I joined a band from an ad I saw. I joined as a guitarist and that turned out to be Simon"s band. They broke up after one rehearsal and we found a drummer.

What made you want to start your own band"
I"ve been playing and making music since I was 8 or 9. I"ve been playing guitar since I was 9. My mom is a jazz singer" so music has always been in the family.

Where do you guys practise"
In my shed" though we were kicked out of there a few weeks ago" we were way too loud. We are going to probably sound proof it.

So your EP" State " Nature" got released just a few months ago" where"d you record it and who did you record it with"
We recorded it in Simon"s house" in the middle of nowhere. Well not really" just outside Celbridge. We recorded it with Ciaran Bradshaw" a really old friend of mine" spent about a week making it" and then mixed it in Suite Studios.

What did it feel like when you saw your EP being sold in Tower Records"
A bit strange" because I go into Tower all the time" I"d walk in and see it on the shelves. It was cool" it was the end of that chapter. I"ve also heard it on the radio" which was equally strange" I don"t think we"re a very radio friendly band. The EP represents the early stages for us" and we"ve moved on" it"s nice to see that.

What"s the story behind the name Envelope"
There is real grand meaning behind the name" thinking up a name for a band is very very difficult. We were never going to stay with Envelope. at the start" it"s merely a vision for a couple of months" and then you"ll get a better name. Some grand name we"d all adore" but that never really happened.

So are you planning on going back to recording"
Yep" we"ve now got a wealth of material now" and it"s been many years since we recorded it" we don"t know what our next release will be" an EP or an album. Two thirds of our live set is stuff we haven"t recorded yet" we decided we"ll take a bit of a break and then maybe go back to recording.

Who have you been compared to"
I"ve been called an ugly Keane singer" that"s the biggest insult of them all"
