Since opening its doors in June 2001 this multi arts venue in the heart of Lisburn City Centre has attracted some of the biggest names in local and international arts as well as an estimated 280"000 visitors per year. Housed on the Island alongside the local council buildings" the centre is funded by the city council as well as a number of other sources and has given Lisburn a much needed boost into the 21st century arts scene.
The main auditorium holds a large stage and tiered seating allowing every audience member an unspoilt view of their favourite band" artist or theatre show. The sound quality and lighting effects on offer are among the best I have encountered in Northern Ireland.
As well as catering for the music scene" the Island Arts Centre offers dance and theatre productions from rising local stars through to some of the biggest names on the international scene. For the non"professionals among us there are a range of classes" workshops and activities to nurture even the littlest bit of creativity we might have.
Last week saw the completion of the annual Music Revolution mini"festival" which showcases the best of Northern Irish talent alongside some big names from across the water. The series of gigs kicked off with recent Irish chart"toppers Bell X1 with support from Belfast"based Red Sirus who have on occasion supported the likes of Snow Patrol in triumphant homecoming gigs. British indie outfit The Delays treaded the boards next with a storming support set from one of Ireland's fastest rising bands Fast Emperors. Firm favourite of Drop"D Duke Special almost lifted the roof off the venue adding to the ecstatic reception that Lisburn held for zany New Yorker Thomas Truax. The local scene was represented through a night of top tunes from MojoFURY" Patiosounds and the hard rocking La Faro.
Unfortunately this particular series of gigs happens only once a year but there is much more to be experienced within this fantastic arena of culture.
