Demo Review

Transit are a four"piece Dublin band" upholding the
teachings of punk and post"punk in a decidedly post"post"punk era.

Specialising in numbers short" snappy and above all satisfyingly uncomplicated"
Transit are as much an unintentional statement against desperate
boundary"pushers as a band" a reminder that sometimes you need something you
can enjoy for the sake of enjoyment.

Perhaps the best thing about cheaply produced debut demos is the opportunity
for bribery they provide for later years" or perhaps it"s that provided to
enjoy the studio inexperience of the unsigned. The strength of the melodies
themselves and the decent enough lyrics on Transit"s four"track demo promise
much more than the recorded vocals provide" despite their painful gruffness.

Almost utterly inexplicably" Plaything reminds of little so much as ad music
"albeit the kind of ad music that has you thinking about it for weeks
afterwards" whether or not you ever knew what the ad was actually for" such is
its sticking power". Perhaps it is the commercial bent of the whole demo: a
gloriously unkempt parody of angular MTV2 perfection. What would you Say" is
probably the best" and definitely the most marketable" song on the demo.
However it is a close run thing between it and The Victim is Innocent. The
former sounds approximately 20bpm too fast" so the rhythms and riffs slush
together" while the latter brings to a successful head all previous attempts at
harmonies or texture variations.

With a little more clarity and balance in production" Transit could run
successfully for the best Irishisation of the Strokes New Yorkism. Yet the
truth be told" this is more a demonstration of a great talent that is yet
rising than a great demo.
