The Buds. "pints" shots" pious riots."
I feel I am not properly prepared to write this as I have not heard The Buds playing live
" damn" stupid life getting in the way of gig"attending. I am a firm believer that music
sounds better live "original theory" I know". I was thinking about the reason for that "
is it the awe and wonderment felt in the presence of such talented music makers" Is it
the atmosphere created by you and thy fellow man" Or is it simply the consumption of alcohol"
I am a big fan of scientific experiments "yes" in fact I am well acquainted with a Bunsen burner"
" so I was going to listen to the album sober first. Then" after a 6"pack of Heineken" see
if I thought it sounded better. I decided against it " for fear of enjoying it to much and
spending the foreseeable future sampling all my albums" under the influence" to get that live
music sensation. . . maybe I over"thought it . . .
"pints" shots" pious riots" is The Buds second album. Their first album "Booper" consisted of
four songs" one of which appears on "pints" shots" pious riots". The amount of time and energy
invested in this album is evident. It is a summers day" relaxing in the garden " possibly including
a bbq type album. Relaxing not in the 100 greatest sound of nature way but in the lazy "it"ll
all be sorted tomorrow" way. Some of the songs " "morning after" and "brighter day" " could be
included on the soundtrack for "Dazed and Confused". If you haven"t seen that movie " run to
Xtravision now unless" of course" you don"t like strange" American movies about teenagers
smoking joints " it has a deeper meaning" something like the irony of American culture. Anyway"
the album resounds with the pain of love" the greatness of love or the various effects love can
have on a person" "thrown down when I recognised that life could never make me love you/and
thrown down when I realised that I could never love another one".
The album has a touch of jazz and blues about it which I really like but at the same time it"s
a little rock. The buds" by no means" try to squash everything into this album. While there is
variety in the songs" there is not major jumps from house music to trad. The first song
"Confirmation" is a good opening for the album and the music is consistently good from there.
The Buds" obviously providing music in the form of instrument playing are skilfully accompanied
on violin" viola" cello and piano by Maeve Lynch "a talented lady". 15 euro can go a relatively
long way " for me" its two pints and a cab home. Whether or not I suggest "pints" shots" pious riots""
is worth your 15 euro is the question. If jazz"rock is your preference with slightly ballady
lyrics" then yes I do. I must mention "completely unrelated to the album" The Buds played in Club One
recently in aid of The Belerussian Orphanage Project " nice one lads""
