Jinx Lennon, Magic, Rawness & Rage Live At The Sugar Club

Jinx Lennon is a artist who weaves the powers of anger, angst, truth and disdain with music, poetry and spoken word in a fiery, ballsy, rebellious, punk manner. Interrupted by rays of sunshine, even during the bleakest moments in his lyrics. Miss Paula Flynn’s angelic voice adds a contrasting, powerful and uplifting element to the ferocity of Jinx Lennon.

His new live DVD Magic, Rawness & Rage Live at the Sugar Club is exactly as the name suggests, opening with Jinx staring through his tippexed Free State Nova sunglasses and the cameras are quick to pick up on the madness of Anthrax of the Mind and Balaclava Boys.

There’s a certain vulnerability to it, a vulnerability which can only come upon those who really are on stage to bare the raw truths

Jinx Lennon’s music has an intriguing appeal to it, in that, he is unique in his style, there’s no one else out there doing what he’s doing, telling the raw truth about contemporary life. Listening to his records can be inspirational and unsettling at the same time as you quickly identify with what can only be comprehended as truth disguised as madness.

When exposed to it live you get to identify with it even more, as can be seen in this DVD, with his facial expressions, his movements, his magic wand, his noisemakers, his megaphone and the way he speaks to his audiences before they even realise that he isn’t, in fact, connecting with them this is part of his music.

Being able to see Jinx Lennon live helps bring home the fact that what can first be seen as slightly insane becomes more and more familiar. Jinx brings out the little voice inside your head, that conservatism won’t allow out, and he gives it a just persona.

The show begins with Jinx alone on stage and there’s a certain vulnerability to it, a vulnerability which can only come upon those who really are on stage to bare the raw truths. He’s joined after seven tracks for the lullaby The Lookout Posts of Forkhill and Everyone’s Got A Mental Home Inside Their Head by Miss Paula Flynn who’s humming has the ability to make Jinx’s lyrics sink in even deeper.

Self defence is not violence, it’s common sense

Their banter on stage brings a real sense of familiarity to the gig, it seems to take them from the stage onto the same level as everyone in the audience. Miss Flynn leaves Jinx alone on the stage again for another couple of tracks before rejoining him for The Bachelors of Pearse Park. Stop giving out about Nigerians is as relevant now as when he wrote it, something which Jinx is not afraid to point out as he begins, challenging the mistreatment of all foreigners in Ireland.

One of the highlights of the show comes when Jinx announces that “Self defence is not violence, it’s common sense”, Protect Thyself and Home begins with a whisper but as the mood changes from the entitlement to the act his voice begins to get much more distinct, his words raising questions. He even stops to ask the audience what would they do if they found someone braking into their home. Then comes the self defence, the punishment the “Say A, A! Say B, A! Say B, B!”

But then again Miss Paula Flynn returns to the stage to bring peace and serenity back as the couple sing the beautiful Orange Cranes of Greenore.

A great compliment to his albums this DVD really shows you exactly who Jinx Lennon is. The best part is learning how Josh Wink’s Higher State of Consciousness had a part to play in the City of Styrofoam Cups.
