See Saw is the third single release from indie Irish punk-rock outfit Jester. After storming to victory at the prestigious Irish Unsigned Act Competition last year, the group were given the opportunity to work with some of the best names in Irish music production, as well as some recording time in Grouse Lodge where they created and worked on this single.
This change in production values is immediately evident in the track, everything from the vocals to the arrangements is polished to perfection and yet retains the charm of their previous single releases. Where their other singles fell slightly short was in coherence and organisation. In See Saw, Jester seem to have really found their musical feet.
The track is both heavy rock and punky pop, which creates an interesting sound which I have no doubt will become Jester’s own signature sound. They are re-inventing that gritty yet danceable rock and soul sound which was originally coined by groups like The Cure and re-inventing it for 2010. With Jester, rock music has just gotten a little more chic. Skinny jeans are loosening up, and vocalists are going back to their grittier and more soulful roots, rather than just yelling ad nauseum.
See Saw is effortlessly listenable and the only real problem I can find with this track is that there aren’t, as yet, more to listen to. When their debut album arrives, Jester are sure to explode onto the world stage.
Jester are certainly proving themselves to be the ones to watch in Irish music at the moment. They are currently in the process of creating their debut album and if See Saw is anything to go by, it’s destined to be a gift that your ears will thank you for.
