Right before their appearance at Indiependence, Barry Nevin of p-funkers Gatchaiocht had a natter with Drop-d about keeping Cork under a groove…

What influences you and your sound?

The bands are influenced include Isaac Hayes, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Booty Band, Parliament/Funkadelic, James Taylor Quartet, Nina Simone, Jaco Pastorius, Danny Thompson, Jimmy Hendrix…

Cork is hardly known for its funk quotient. What brought it on? Filling the gap?

Because it’s fun and it just kind of happened when the group of us came together. It’s the one genre that the band has come to have most in common and it just kind of developed out of the original jams.

What can newbies expect from your performance at Indiependence?

Good old fashioned family fun, soda pop and sunshine. But seriously, just a funk-filled night with some brilliant music and great people!

Best moment in the band’s lifetime so far?

We have had few highlights in our brief career, these include one of our first gigs in the Bru Bar where the place was packed beyond belief and we had a fantastic night with all the crowd afterwards. Another one was when we won the UCC Live Music Society’s BOTB in 2011.

Who are you looking forward to at Indiependence?

Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip, Daft Funk, Editors, Ryan Sheridan.

What’s in store for 2011?

We have some gigs in the pipeline for August and September but we are just taking things as they come for the time being.
