Mark Roche sits in with Irish hip-hop wunderkind Lecs Luther to discuss the future, rapping in accent and America…

How did Lecs Luther begin rapping?

It started off with me being on stage with Pharrel when I was like 12 and rocking with him to a crowd of 2000 or so, after that I knew: yeah, I’m going to do this when I’m older! In more recent times I’m just sick of seeing the same old crappy rap spa’s boasting and making me ears bleed, so I decided last year I was going to make an alter ego and spit rhymes.

Is it hard to be recognised as a rapper in Dublin? Are there venues for you to gig even in Ireland?

In Dublin it’s not really, I mean everyone knows each other and there are so many places to go music wise if you have any bit of talent. The only problem is there’s no scene for hip hop and the small scene that does exist isn’t a big one you can make any sort of career from, as far as gigs? Yeah there are plenty of spots going these days

Lecs Luther is your alter ego, is it easier to do what you do as Lecs?

Yeah of course it is, I mean that’s why my rap name isn’t my real one; because going with this ridiculous name allows me to do certain things that if I did when I’m myself I’d get battered (or some sense knocked in to me y’know?); so since my name is Lecs, now I’m a new person! Goodbye past.

What do you say to people that compare you to OFWGKTA?

I mean it’s totally fine with me. Those guys are deadly and I’m all for them and of course if you’re doing something different in any way people will compare you to them or whoever, but once I’m home and unleashed expect something that’s never been done before and if anyone can come up with someone to compare me to I’ll quit rapping. I hope people realise everything I’ve done, to me, was an experiment, all I wanted to do was see if a couple heads bounced to it and if they did I’d do more so take stuff with a pinch of salt.

I don’t know a lot about rap; is your style of rapping a new sensation in the genre? It’s quite calm and methodical, quite different to the likes of The Game etc. [Did OFWGKTA pioneer this style?]

Nah, I don’t think so pal. I mean ever since I’ve been in me dungarees I’ve been rapping about the most random and stupid things you can think of. I mean, that’s my style but listen deeper and you’ll understand the meaning behind it all, watching cartoons, movies and all that inspired the hell out of me; so I’m going to rap about that and not the things that I have never done like shooting youngfellas or coming from the ghetto (although I’ll hand check some of you)!

Will Ireland and being Irish always run through your music? Is it life experience that helps you write?

Well I’ll start off by saying I’m Irish born and raised, all my mams side is from here and I get my distinctive colour from my dad’s side which is Nigerian , but yeah I’m from North Dublin and living there is cool. There is so much going on every day, so yes it does help me write more.

What’s the plan for you until Christmas?

Ignore all these record labels and stay sober!

What does 2012 hold for Lecs Luther? Another release?

Of course! Expect me to be all in your face with an aul one on me right and a Mic on the left.

Why are you in America? Recording? Collaboration? Or something completely unrelated?

Something that only my la familia know, but I will say it’s for the better.

You’re a regular kid from Dublin; your video is so well made. Was it a friend who helped or did you get it made professionally?

Yeah I’m regular but I can be quite mischievous at the same time and have dabbled in things like graffiti and the usual things an 18 year old does y’know? My video was shot by a fella I know through a rapper out in London called Dirty Dike who I met online a couple stories ago he’s mad cool and is going to be huge!
