Fashion: Hope Is The Thing With Feathers
Drop-d’s Laura Daly discusses feathers, and a DIY entrepeurship explosion in the making.
I never thought there would ever be an opportunity where I would get to say this, but, ladies, it is ALL about the feathers. This summer’s hair craze has boiled down to plucking our feathered friends, and using them as dashing hair extensions to add a bit of funk to our generally vitamin D deprived locks. And me-oh-my, do I love it. Right now, my “extensive” research is showing that they are a pricey bundle, particularly the authentic ones (UGG boot, or FUGG boot, your choice).
Fine Featherheads claim to be the original makers of the feather hair extension. Founded in Boulder, C.O (whilst listening to John Denver?) by a lady called Dakota, in 2010. Now, Dakota, sits on a gold mine as the feathered money makers can be seen on everyone from Miley Cyrus to *ahem* Steve Tyler.
The main website for Fine Featherheads, www.finefeatherheads.com, does not allow you to purchase from the site. It directs you where to go to buy them (boo on us Irish folk) but also gives the option to become involved with the company, take on some stock, and sell it yourself. Frankly, I myself am interested in this aspect, I think it is a fantastic move on their behalf (providing they do not allow EVERYONE to become a wholesaler, thus saturating the teen feather market) not only in the recession busting capacity, but also in the sense that hundreds of thousands of young women will be on this site in the coming months, and giving them an opportunity to become a wee bit business savvy, is undoubtedly genius on Ms. Dakota’s behalf.
Soon enough, our darling friend, Penneys, will have their version, so the feathers will be seen on everyone, everywhere, anytime of the day, thus the potential to lose their class. But I definitely think that buying the originals (I’m a total UGG girl) would be much more worth your while. The quality is much better, they are bonded at the top of the extension, so they won’t fall apart after your first night out with them on. They are all handcrafted, so the condition of the feather would be much better than its lower-priced counterpart.
Anyway, go have a look. Google and see who’s wearing them, and how well they look, They have me very excited! I love a bit of hippie-chic, and this is the right amount of subtle my inner Joplin needed.
