I watched It From The Roadside is the new EP from Brighton four piece Crooked Mountain, Crooked Sea. Since the band began playing shows last year they have been developing their own unique sound in the post-rock/post-hardcore genres which have been fairly underrepresented in recent years.
There’s six tracks on the EP, musically each of the songs is quite different, the band come across as a mix of Primus and Muse. Their songs have quite a complex and intelligent feel that makes them appealing although really not very easy listening.
The opening track Slow News Day starts out quite restrained but builds through melodic guitars and vocals to the chorus.
There’s more hard-hitting songs like They Don’t Mean Anything and the schizophrenic Out in the Dark. Mice in the Cellar has already brought the band into the public eye by being included on cult label Big Scary Monsters’ 10 Collection compilation. The final two tracks on the album are the reflective and moody That Drum’s Discordant Sound and Time and Place.
The EP’s good but the main problem I found was the vocal production. On most of the songs the singer seems drowned out by the rest of the band and it makes the lyrics quite hard to make out.
The band have embarked on several UK tours already this year, joining Hold Your Horse Is on a ten-date trip, as well as a mini-tour with acoustic act Shoes and Socks Off (aka ex-Meet Me In St Louis frontman Tobias Hayes). They have also appeared on BBC6 Music’s Tom Robinson for an interview and gained extensive airplay on the Introducing strand.
The EP is available from Monday 16th of August on CD and Digital Download.
