All music fans get a thrill from hearing the first demos of their favorite bands. It gives you a prespective on how far they’ve come in developing their music, and also how they write music by themselves without the assistance of a production team.

borelia MassIt can be sometimes the most sincere release from a band. And so, this is what I received from Borelia Mass. Two tracks. Resourcefully recorded with the assistance of trainee engineers at Northampton College, a bit of tightening up and the addition of another two or three more tunes and this could be bonafide EP release.

Blasting from Northampton, and taking their name from a Bleed The Sky tune, Borelia Mass join the ranks of other Midlands metal outfits such as Nekkrosis and Gutworm. Choosing to progress in an extreme direction, Borelia Mass have taken elements of Pantera and Sepultura, although at several points in these songs I could hear a definite bleed-through from fellow county-dwellers Raging Speedhorn. Rather than a blatant rip-off, this comes across as a more deliberate tip of the hat.

Their song writing skills are honed more towards delivering a sharp charge of adrenaline. This is evident in Kindle, the initial build-up leads away to something that Fear Factory would be proud to have in their repertoire. Drums and guitar pummel in tandem, and perhaps the only critisism is the tightness of instruments layered together. Again, this is only a demo and such small blemishes can be forgiven.

Borelia MassUnited We Rise is equally as good, although the breakdown about halfway through really caught my attention. The vocals on both tunes are strong albeit a little bit full-on in their consistency. Reminded me a bit of Necrophagia. And you can’t hear what they’re singing either.

I’d love to find out how their next few tunes progress, although progression is the name of the game here. These songs are good for a band beginning to find their niche. They have aggression in buckets. It’ll be interesting to see if they can develop something distinctive.
