Blotted Science – The Animation of Entomology EP
“…The flow of the four songs though is seamless and they all bleed into one cohesive listen…”
Needless to say, this has been waited on for a while, nearly five years in fact. Indeed, that long has passed since Blotted Science’s one and only album The Machinations of Dementia. The proggy instrumental metal project helmed by Cannibal Corpse bassist Alex Webster and guitar wizard Ron Jarzombek produced just that lone record it was rightly held in high regard. Now, a few years on, and a couple of drummers later, Blotted Science has reconvened for, not a new album, but rather this painfully short EP – The Animation of Entomology.
And now with Obscura drummer Hannes Grossmann in tow, Blotted Science has endured a revivifying unlike anything before. The first three of these seven songs remind you why you missed this band with opener Ingesting Blattaria erupting with urgency, both in devastating but lush fashion.
Ron Jarzombek is simply fucking sublime here. Dizzying fret bothering is bountiful, but would you really expect anything less? The man is looked on in such high esteem as a guitar player for a reason. However, new drummer, Grossmann more than earns his stripes keeping up with the breakneck speed of Jarzombek, slotting in beautiful with Webster’s bass for a tight rhythm section.
The first three tracks of course delight but following that is the four part epic A Sting Operation. All four slabs are short but still unrelenting barrages, with thick walls of riffs and cascading, meandering guitar leads. The flow of the four songs though is seamless and they all bleed into one cohesive listen.
Perhaps The Animation of Entomology is all we are going get from Blotted Science for some time before there is a new album. If that’s the case then this should do just fine to sate appetites for the time being, but the taste for Blotted Science will surely spark again very soon.
