There were rumblings of happiness and despair on social networks this Tuesday as musicians received the news of this year’s Hard Working Class Heroes line-up before the official announcement was made later in the day. Running as a showcase of the country’s most promising talent, HWCH has proved a staple in the Irish music calendar over the last five years with its concurring photography exhibition and mentor sessions along with almost 100 bands. This year however unlike previous ‘cultural invasions’ from Scotland and Canada, the organisers have given a ringing endorsement of 2009′s talent with a 100% Irish line-up.
Here at Drop-d we’re glad to see the list includes some exciting bands who are long overdue a performance along with plenty of new stuff we’ve never heard: hello Black Robots and Theme Tune Boy. As usual some bands will return to play a mid-level slot despite an overwhelming number of admissions over on Breakingtunes.com. It’s unfortunate that many lost out in the final shake-down but we’ve come to realise there’s just too much deadliness on this one small island. Discussion brewing online suggested a timely ‘anti-event’ for snubbed acts could appear closer to the festival time but the general consensus so far seems positive.
Formally launched by ASIWYFA in July (though they will not play the festival itself), newer additions Adebisi Shank, Jogging, Heathers, Not Squares and Only Fumes and Corpses reveal the organisers have embraced less conventional genres to show the breadth of talent apparent in Ireland. Each year the festival’s approach inspires a lively discussion of local music amongst fans and performers, on websites and Instant Messaging, gradually working up to three days’ venue hopping with a high risk of rain. And at this stage, we’d be lost without it. It’s been an experimental ride involving practically every gimmick, band and venue in Dublin to some degree and there have been some noses out of joint, some sensational occasions (Peaches royding a giant dick in 2006, The Vinny Club‘s Zoo-era Bono last year) with more soon to follow…perhaps ex-Migalinx duo Blood Bottler have some interesting plans to keep the audience entertained!
The full line-up spans pop, dance and rock across several Dublin city venues. Hard Working Class Heroes runs from 16th – 18th October. Single night tickets retail at €18.50 with weekend wristbands available for €40. For more information, visit www.hwch.net.
