Talking to Drop-d, the band’s vocalist John Dinsmore described the band as being “heavily influenced by early U2…we try to make sure there’s a good dynamic” the band have incredible chemistry “I’ve known the guys for a long long time” continued John , “we just wanted to go out there and gig and we just started to get people behind us, Tom Dunne and Today FM. We just made really steady progress and it just got bigger and bigger each year”.

Once described as Northern Ireland’s hardest working unsigned band, they have been been touring tirelessly supporting well known acts such as Sonic Youth, The Chemical Brothers, The Duke Spirit, Nine Black Alps, The Parlotones and plent more. They have played in venues from Marley Park to Canadian Music Week and played a further six shows at South by Southwest Music (SXSW) music festival in Austin, Texas.

“One of my favourite gigs we did was in London it was in a place called The Hope & Anchor, it’s where The Jam used to always play. It was just one of those gigs where we went in and the amps were about to go on fire it was just awful there wasn’t many people about, we went that night after sound check and it was completely stuffed, and one of the best gigs we ever did”.

Closer to home then have also played on the BBC and UTV and been given air time by a number of acclaimed Irish and UK music stations like Xfm, BBC, Virgin, Today Fm and 2fm.

“We started gigging in Dublin, then London and New York. We sort of moved up a level every couple of months. It’s been fantastic…we just want to build on it this year, we might be doing a lot bigger things this year”

Their debut single called Turn It On/Shadowlands was released by the UK based indie record label Pronia. This was a leg up for the band who then went on to self-release Staring Stars Down in 2008 via Absolute Marketing and Universal Records Distribution who also deal with musicians such as Dave Matthews and Imogen Heap.

The Beat Poets first EP The Making has been acclaimed by a number of different publications. It was described by NME as “Blistering, frenzied, blood-stirring, rock that weaves its way through U2, The Foo Fighters and The Vines”. XFM London called them “Excellent quality, top of the shop”. A Hotpress reviewer called them “A band on the cusp of something big…truly special…our new favourite band”. And impressively The Irish Star claimed they were “soon be the biggest act of Belfast since Snow Patrol”. When asked how it felt to be compared to a band as big as Snow Patrol, John joked: “I don’t even have a Snow Patrol album”

“I think it’s just because it’s that kind of rock and we’re from the north…If we sold even a quarter of what they’ve sold in the past year or two I’d be delighted”.

It has been a whirlwind year for the band who recently confirmed that they will be playing at the Aid for Haiti gig in Belfast on January 31st.

The Making has been available since November 30th from the bands MySpace and all major download sites. More information can be found using the links below.

Their older tracks Staring Stars Down, G.I and Turn It On are also available on iTunes, the link to which can be found on the band’s MySpace.
