Alright the Captain’s Euro Tour Diary: Days 2-4 – Antwerp, Rotterdam & Caen
Our heroes in Alright the Captain present more details of their ongoing excursion to Europe. Line up and prepare for Record Store Day! Prostitutes! And an unintentional reminder of the existence of the Boo Radleys!
DAY 2:
So after the van broke down, 24 hour mission to Holland and Record Store Day, it would take a lot to top what had already passed! So we hit up Antwerp, Music City! A rehearsal/recording/bar hidden deep in Antwerp that housed folks keen for music and wild scenes. This gig was like playing in a factory built for nothing but what we try to do everyday. Enthusiastic people, great music, Incredible food and the weirdest flat on the planet as accommodation. An amazing mastodon style band called Your Highness and the Antwerp train station are my recommendations. Also a bar that gives out party supplies and has a vaporiser behind the bar…
DAY 3:
So off to Rotterdam. A city destroyed and rebuilt by WW2 that now has an unfortunate namesake song that does not come close to doing justice for the beauty within. This city is the shit. We had a gig booked in hostel bar. We set up next to the free Internet computers and proceeded to rinse the ‘free’ beer policy and play as loud as possible to a rammel of backpackers.
So the gig was great…then those that knew the city invited us to see a ‘titty bar’ so……we ended up in the sleaziest den of prostitution you cam imagine. Order some beers…feel uncomfortable..get the fuck out…once we reached a new bar full to the brim with punters playing bingo and singing along to queen it looked like we’d made it. This tour is going well!
DAY 4:
We set off early from Rotterdam with a lot of hungover heads and undertook our biggest journey in baking hot weather and getting raped by toll charges to Caen in France but a lot of shit talk and a few smoke breaks later we finally made it to Cafe L’ubu. A quick little explore around we found an awesome castle with some amazing views from above the city. Back to the venue for a hot and sweaty little show where we had a lot of fun, the wickets absolutely killed it and we were also joined by a mad little punk band called WD40. Turned out that Pascal the promoter thought we were the singer from the Boo Radleys‘ new band. After the show we loaded in to the van with a load of food and beers and made our way to the nearest beach where we sat and had a few drinks and fell asleep under the stars much to the passing locals amusement early in the morning. With another long drive ahead of us to get to Luxembourg we set off bright and early making a few pit stops to enjoy the sun along the way…
